Rain pounded against the windows of the Penmark apartment. Kenneth Penmark had just moments ago set down the telephone, having talked to the hospital. His wife, Christine Penmark, had attempted suicide shortly after drugging Rhoda following learning that her daughter was a murderer.

Rhoda had killed Clara Post, an elderly woman who used to babysit her, Claude Daigle, a boy at her school who one the penmanship medal over her, and Leroy Jessup, the apartment's janitor who disliked Rhoda.

Since the thunderstorm was quite loud, Kenneth thought he should check on his eight year old daughter, who had survived the drugging, on his way back to bed. As he entered the room, he discovered to his surprise that Rhoda was not there! Curled back blankets and a doll were left on her bed. Kenneth was greatly worried. Was she hiding? Missing? Kidnapped? He searched everywhere only to find nothing.

"Rhoda!?" he cried out, frightened for his only child.

There was no response.

"Rhoda!? Where are you!?"

There was a good five minutes of calling and searching, all without any trace. He heard someone knocking at the door. Was it Rhoda? Kenneth quickly rushed there, opened the door, and saw Monica, the landlady, in a fuzzy pink robe with curlers in her hair.

"Is Rhoda alright? I heard you calling for her."

"No...she's missing!"

"Missing!?"

"Yes! I went to go check on her, but she wasn't there!"

Mr. Daigle had also heard the calling for Rhoda, and came over. He was clearly tired, but he understood what it was like to be without a child, as his son had died in an 'accident'.

"Mr. Penmark, if you'd like, I'll go to town to see if I can find Rhoda."

"Thank you, Mr. Daigle. Will Mrs. Daigle mind?"

"Not at all. She's drunk and out of it."

"I'll go with you."

Kenneth put on his coat and hat, and the two went outside. Rain drenched them, but that was the least of their concerns. Mr. Daigle handed Kenneth a flashlight to search with. They began their search, continuing to call Rhoda with no response.
